
School Improvement Plan
Mission Statement:
As a multicultural community, we will inspire and empower each student to become an academically successful citizen of a global society while providing a safe and nurturing environment.
Target Goals:
- All students will increase their reading comprehension across the curriculum.
Reading comprehension is defined as finding meaning from informational text.
- All students will improve writing/literacy skills across the curriculum.
Improving writing/literacy skills is defined at Sevilla Elementary/Middle - organization through effective prewriting, editing skills (self-edit), idea (main theme).
Interventions:
- Classroom Intervention –Goal 1
Teachers will use a variety of instructional strategies to teach reading comprehension specifically in the areas of: retell/summarize, vocabulary and extending meaning including, but not limited to, a core of graphic organizers and guided reading techniques that are familiar across all grade levels.
- Classroom Intervention –Goal 2
Teachers will use a broad range of instructional techniques to teach writing/literacy skills specifically in the areas of: idea, pre-writing, and editing, including, but not limited to, graphic organizers, 6-Traits writing rubrics, and editing checklists.
- Communication Intervention:
School will develop and implement means of informing parents and community of SIP efforts and progress to include:
Commander’s Channel – post up-coming SIP events and goals
Weekly Newsletter to Parents – tips to parents and goals specific to reading comprehension
- SHC Partnership Intervention:
Teachers will provide information/training to parents to apply the interventions practiced in the classroom in order to improve reading comprehension and writing/literacy skills across the curriculum to include:
Sponsor a base-wide read-a-thon involving students reading in the community and guest readers from the community in the school. Students and the community will collectively read and track their success throughout the year resulting in a culminating event of recognition for participants.
- Technology Intervention:
Teachers will use a variety of technology tools and innovations across all grade levels to improve students reading comprehension across the curriculum to include the following:
Extensive us of overhead or smart boards to facilitate literature comparisons using graphic organizers, close activities, etc.
